Our team

We have an expert multidisciplinary team of physicians, therapists, orthotists and nurses specialising in treating babies and children with congenital, developmental and acquired musculoskeletal conditions.

We also have a world-renowned 'Gait Lab' that helps support our clinical decision-making.

Our team has trained in fellowships and specialist units nationally and internationally, and we are committed to providing high quality orthopaedic care for children.

We have extensive long-term experience in the treatment of complex disorders including:

  • cerebral palsy
  • developmental dysplasia of the hip
  • club feet
  • bone infections and limb deformities, including the sequale of
  • paediatric trauma
  • pathologies of the hips, knees, feet and ankles
  • pathologies of the upper limb
  • bone and soft tissue tumours (sarcomas).

We work closely with other clinicians caring for children in other hospitals and the community.

We have an active teaching and research programme.

Clinical team

Mr Andrew Wainwright BSc MB ChB MEd FRCS (Trauma and Orth)

Mr Wainwright is a graduate of Leicester University Medical School. He undertook his orthopaedic training in the Oxford region and a clinical fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

Mr Wainwright was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon in 2003.

Mr Andrew Wainwright

Mrs Rachel Buckingham MB ChB FRCS (Trauma and Orth)

Mrs Buckingham is a graduate of Bristol medical school. She undertook her orthopaedic training the South West of England followed by a clinical fellowship at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.

Mrs Buckingham was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2007.

Mrs Rachel Buckingham

Mr Alpesh Kothari MA BM Bch AFHEA MSc DPhil FRCS (Trauma and Orth)

Mr Kothari is a graduate of both Cambridge and Oxford Universities. He undertook his orthopaedic training in the Oxford region followed by a clinical fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

He was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeon in 2019.

Mr Alpesh Kothari

Mr Maximillian Mifsud MD MScRes FRCS(Tr&Orth) FEBOT

Mr Max Mifsud is a graduate of the University of Malta medical school. He undertook his orthopaedic training in Malta first, and then in the Oxford Deanery.

He underwent two clinical fellowships in Oxford (one in Bone Infection and Limb Deformity, and another in Paediatric Orthopaedics), a Sarcoma and Complex Joint Reconstruction fellowship in London at the Royal National Orthopaedic Centre of Stanmore, and a research fellowship in Cerebral Palsy at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.

Mr Mifsud has been a consultant in Oxford since 2022. He is fluent in English, French and Maltese.
