DNA Antibodies

Also known as: dSDNA Antibodies; Crithidia

Anti-double stranded DNA (dsDNA) antibodies are highly sensitive and specific markers of SLE. Raised levels are found in 70 - 90% of patients with SLE and tend to correlate with disease activity. However the long half-life of IgG makes the quantitation of serum levels an insensitive measure of response to treatment. Raised levels may also be seen in a small minority of patients with chronic active hepatitis.

NB In keeping with current evidence-based guidelines, antibodies to DNA and ENA antigens will not be performed on sera that are negative for ANA.
