Critical Care, Theatres, Anaesthetics, Diagnostics and Pharmacy is the largest Division in the prestigious and internationally renowned Oxford University Hospitals; this means that you will have access to the most up-to-date treatments and cutting-edge technology that healthcare has to offer.

Directorates

The Division is composed of the following Directorates.

Anaesthetics, Critical Care and Theatres

The Directorate comprises:

  • 23 adult critical care beds
  • 25 operating theatres
  • Department of Anaesthetics
  • pre-operative assessment
  • resuscitation
  • Pain Relief Unit.

The Directorate manages three theatre suites across the Trust, which will determine where you have your surgery:

  • West Wing Theatres - 14 theatres
    Neurosurgery, Specialist Surgery and Paediatrics
  • John Radcliffe Theatres - 7 theatres
    Trauma, Vascular, OMFS and Emergency
  • Horton Theatres - 4 theatres
    Trauma, General Surgery, Gynaecology, Urology and Specialist Surgery

The Pain Relief Unit provides help and advice in managing persistent pain. Our inpatient service becomes involved in managing your pain at the request of your medical team, which can occur at any point during your stay.

Our outpatient service aims to ease suffering and improve the quality of life for patients who are experiencing persistent pain. Pain may result from having surgery or be caused by any number of long-term conditions

Pathology and Laboratories

Pathology and Laboratories provides diagnostic and screening laboratory tests across a wide range of specialties, including:

  • Haematology
  • Biochemistry
  • Immunology
  • Microbiology
  • Genetics
  • Cellular Pathology
  • Molecular Diagnostics.

The service is in continual transformation, adopting new technologies, introducing new tests and supporting the provision of cost effective healthcare.

Radiology and Imaging

Radiology and Imaging provides diagnostic and therapeutic radiology across a wide range of modalities including:

  • plain film
  • CT
  • MRI
  • PET/ CT
  • nuclear medicine
  • ultrasound
  • mammography
  • interventional radiology
  • angiography
  • fluoroscopy.

The service aims to provide to patients the latest imaging technology and techniques using a highly experienced and specialised workforce in a safe environment.

Pharmacy

As almost all patients are given some form of medicine during their medical care making pharmacy services essential. The pharmacy staff are vital to ensure the safe prescription, supply and administration of medicines for inpatients and outpatients.

Almost all patients will use one of the services offered by our Division during their treatment at OUH, and we aim to provide the best possible care and experience to all.
