Moving Medicine

Moving Medicine is an initiative by the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK) in partnership with Public Health England and Sport England.

Its development has been led by Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctors from the OxSport team in Oxford, in partnership with specialists, GPs and patients across the country.

It is dedicated to spreading best practice, research and advice about physical activity to clinicians and patients to create a healthier, happier and more active nation.

The 'prescribing movement' resources have been developed in consultation with over 300 medical specialists, general practitioners, researchers and patients.

There are reviews of the literature on physical activity in specific diseases, and the resource differs from others that summarise the evidence base on physical activity, as the structure has been designed by clinicians for clinicians to use in practice.

Users are able to dig as deep as they want to into the evidence base, embedded in a time-based framework to support good quality conversations based on established behavioural change techniques and motivational interviewing theory.

Active Hospitals

This initiative is led by Sport and Exercise Medicine Doctors from the OxSport team in OUH in partnership with Public Health England and Sport England.

Active Hospitals aims to change the physical activity culture within hospitals to encourage patients to move more - bringing a wide range of positive health benefits.

Physical activity interventions were embedding within multiple clinical pathways across the Trust including exercise classes, promotional materials, activity programmes, goal setting booklets and motivational interviewing, as well as staff training.

We have created a toolkit to share our learning and assist other NHS trusts to create their own Active Hospitals.

External independent evaluation was undertaken by Sheffield Hallam University at the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. The evaluation report found that this approach is highly valued and acceptable to patients and staff within the NHS.
