Return to Practice - Nursing

Inspired by the idea of returning to nursing? Still committed to care and compassion?

If you've ever thought about returning to practice, now is the time to do it.

'Return to Practice' — a video by Oxford Brookes University's faculty of Health and Life Sciences

The Health Education England 'Return to Practice' campaign encourages and supports nurses and midwives with lapsed NMC registration back to the profession.

Return to Practice website -

The Return to Practice programme offers nurses and midwives previously registered with the NMC supported training to rebuild their confidence and competence:

  • Adult nursing
  • Children's nursing
  • Midwifery

Mental health opportunities are available with our colleagues at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The advantages of Return to Practice at Oxford University Hospitals include the following.

  • University course fees paid
  • Support in finding a clinical placement
  • Theory and clinical-based training
  • Dedicated sign-off mentor
  • Clinical Supervision support sessions
  • Simulation techniques to practise skills
  • Preceptorship support

In February 2018 we are launching our new seconded route into Return to Practice. Oxford University Hospitals will employ you as a Band 3 clinical support worker in a supportive clinical placement.

Acceptance on to this programme guarantees you a place on the Oxford Brookes University Return to Practice course in either the September or January cohort.

You will be supported in practice by your team to complete your course, and will then convert from a Band 3 to a Band 5 qualified nurse.

Details will be published on NHS Jobs - please visit this page for updates.

Return to Practice Programme

Working with Oxford Brookes University's Return to Practice team, we offer support during their 15 week course.

The course is a mixture of nursing theory and practice, aiming to rebuild your competence and confidence. In practice we will support you with a 12 week placement that builds on your previous experience and looks towards your future career aims.

During your placement you will be supported by a sign-off mentor to meet the clinical competence required for NMC re-registration.
