Hepatology Ambulatory Unit (HAU)

The Hepatology Ambulatory Unit (HAU) is on Level 6B of the John Radcliffe Hospital main building.

The HAU is run by Hepatology Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists. It is a nurse-led service, with consultant input as required.

The service offers day case paracentesis, which helps avoid emergency admissions for patients with large volume ascites.

The unit also provides an ambulatory service for patients recently discharged from hospital, and for patients needing an urgent assessment.

Patients who attend the unit and unexpectantly require an admission receive specialised care immediately, and are transferred to an inpatient ward.

We also provide a venesection service for patients with Genetic Haemochromatosis.
