Wantage Maternity Unit

Wantage Maternity Unit is the smallest of the three Oxfordshire freestanding midwifery-led units and is located in the heart of Wantage. The unit is staffed by a dedicated team of qualified midwives, and is the ideal place for women who have experienced an uncomplicated pregnancy and are expecting a normal birth. The unit provides care for women in the Wantage and Abingdon areas, working closing with the Abingdon midwifery team.

Facilities

The unit offers a safe and secure environment for women to give birth, with midwives providing one-to-one support in labour.

It has two birthing rooms, one with a large pool. Whilst in labour women are encouraged to move into whatever position they feel most comfortable - the rooms contain bean bags, birth balls and other equipment to help you. There is also a large postnatal room, seating area and kitchen facilities.

In addition to the large birthing pool, pain relieving options during labour include:

  • Entonox (gas and air)
  • aromatherapy
  • massage
  • wheat bags
  • Meptid (an injection)
  • TENs machines.

We welcome and value the support of birthing partners.
