The Trust is celebrating the achievements of its creative team this autumn.

Oxford Medical Illustration (OMI), the in-house design, photography and video production team at Oxford University Hospitals, has won two categories at the annual British Medical Association (BMA) Patient Information Awards.

OMI won the 'Best Patient Information produced by an NHS Trust' category for a film providing information to pregnant women about anaesthetic procedures for elective Caesarean sections at Oxford University Hospitals.

The team also won the 'Best patient information for screening services' category for a film about having a gastroscopy (a procedure in which a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is used to look inside the oesophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine) which was produced for Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and filmed at High Wycombe Hospital.

The C-section film was produced in conjunction with Dr Julia Bowditch, Consultant Anaesthetist at Oxford University Hospitals, and supported by the League of Friends.

The gastroscopy film was produced in collaboration with Dr Sue Cullen, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

The annual BMA Patient Information Awards attract hundreds of entries in a wide variety of media formats from across the healthcare communications sector. They are awarded by an expert panel of clinical and communications experts.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, BMA President, Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE, said:

"We are privileged to be able to host the Patient Information Awards with this year's recipients showcasing the very highest standard of innovative, well-designed and carefully balanced patient information.

"This is a great opportunity to recognise the importance and value of the resources available to patients which, as highlighted by the winners and runners up today, can be a great source of support, comfort and practical guidance for patients throughout challenging times."

Roddy McColl, Head of OMI, said: "Producing high quality patient information in video format is great for not only patients, who can can see the procedures that they may be expecting, but also healthcare organisations involved as it allows patients to make better informed choices about their treatment."

Jim Tustian, Head of Audiovisual for OMI, added: "It's amazing to be recognised nationally. We're passionate about producing high quality patient information and have attempted to integrate the patient's voice and experience into all our patient information films. Video is a collaborative process and we couldn't achieve anything without the clinical staff and patients who kindly agree to be in the films."

The video production team in OMI has now won 11 awards for its production work since 2013.
