We are delighted to announce that Consultant Spinal Surgeon Mr Jeremy Reynolds, from Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has won the ‘Dedication Award - Research and Healthcare Professional’ at the Bone Cancer Research Trust 'Bone Idols 2021' Awards.

The 150 nominees for the Awards included fundraisers, healthcare professionals, surgeons and researchers.

Mr Reynolds, who was nominated by his colleague, OUH Spinal Nurse Consultant Gerard Mawhinney, was recognised for "dedication to a career committed to spinal sarcoma services and driving improvements in the treatment or spinal sarcoma patients."

Gerard Mawhinney said:

"It was great to see Jeremy awarded with this inaugural award; it is a true testament to his commitment to the treatment of spine sarcoma."

Mr Reynolds and his team continue to enhance the delivery of care to sarcoma patients, with projects ranging from video consenting and studies into the psychological impact on patients and families, to the development of a peer-to-peer sarcoma buddy support system.

Mr Reynolds said:

"I'm honoured and humbled to receive this award amongst so many other worthy candidates. We heard so many brave and sometimes tragic experiences from patients and bereaved parents of patients. It's an absolute privilege to be allowed to offer this highly complex patient group and their families the opportunity for cure. It was fantastic to have shared the evening with key members of the spinal sarcoma team and also my family, especially my two daughters."

Joseph Diaz, Senior Staff Nurse (Spinal Theatre) said:

"I have worked with Jeremy for almost 20 years and I have seen him work long hours operating on sarcoma patients, I am proud to be part of his team."

Daniel Wright, Consultant Spinal Surgeon, said:

"A totally dedicated sarcoma surgeon. Loved by his patients, he puts them right at the centre of all decision-making needed for their care. Second to none in the world of spinal sarcoma surgery. A fantastic and well-deserved award for all his hard work."

Lisa Morris, Clinical Spinal Services Manager, said:

"On behalf of the Oxford Spinal Service, we are overjoyed and extremely proud that Jeremy has won this award. His hard work, dedication and commitment to his patients is commendable; this is recognised jointly by patients and their families for the care he provides for them during difficult times. Jeremy always strives to extend his knowledge to ensure that the patient receives the best possible treatment for their individual needs. Many, many congratulations Jeremy, an award well-deserved!"
