Thrombectomy event brainchild of OUH nurses

On 14 February 2020, Oxford University Hospitals held its first ever Thrombectomy Study Day for 60 nurses and paramedics.

The event was the idea of two nurses - Kirstin Baxter from Neuroradiology and Dawn Hill from the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), who also organised it themselves.

The majority of delegates came from outside the Trust and represented a range of other acute trusts and ambulance services.  Some were stroke specialists, but many were not, and there was a great deal of enthusiasm in the room for bringing everyone together across the disciplines.

The programme was designed to include every aspect of thrombectomy and speakers included consultants and nurses from stroke services and interventional neuroradiology.

Delegates also got the chance to do some group work on a practical task of improving the nurse handover form used when patients are escorted to the JR from referring hospitals.

The event was sponsored by Cereneovus and Stryker, companies that produce the equipment to do mechanical thrombectomies, and was free for delegates to attend.

Feedback from the day was overwhelmingly positive, with the event described as ‘useful and informative’, and ‘extremely well organised… [with a] good variety of speakers and subjects’.
