Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery has joined Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Foundation Trust as our new Chair today (Monday 1 April 2019) following his appointment by the Trust’s Council of Governors in December 2018.

He succeeds Dame Fiona Caldicott whose term of office came to an end yesterday (Sunday 31 March 2019).

Sir Jonathan said: "I am delighted and honoured to be the new Chair of OUH and I am looking forward to meeting and working alongside patients, staff, governors, and our key partners and stakeholders in the local health and care system so that together we can shape a bright future to benefit the people we serve.

"The NHS is a wonderful institution and I am immensely proud to be associated with it. I have been looking forward to joining OUH since I was appointed in December and I am excited at the prospect of the challenges and opportunities ahead."

Sir Jonathan is Professor of Healthcare Law at University College London (UCL) and was awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours List for Services to Bioethics and Healthcare Law.

He is currently Chair of the Health Research Authority, which protects and promotes the interests of participants, patients and the public in health research, although he will step down from this role once his successor has been appointed.

He served on local NHS boards in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight for more than 20 years up to March 2013 - including being the Chair of a group of primary care trusts, a strategic health authority and two provider trusts.

Sir Jonathan was also a member of the panel of advisers to the Morecambe Bay Investigation, which reported in 2015, and has previously chaired the Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards, the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, and the Human Genetics Commission.

Speaking when Sir Jonathan's appointment was announced in December 2018, Anne Tutt, Vice-Chairman of OUH, said: "I would like to welcome the appointment by our Council of Governors of Professor Jonathan Montgomery as the new Chair of Oxford University Hospitals.

"I am confident that Jonathan has the leadership and skills to guide our organisation and I look forward to working with him. I am sure that our staff, governors and patients will give him a warm welcome."
