Dame Fiona Caldicott, Chairman of Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, will be stepping down from her role when her current term of office ends on Sunday 31 March 2019 after a decade as Trust Chairman.

Speaking when she announced her intention to step down, in June 2018, Dame Fiona said: "I have worked in the NHS for more than half its existence, and from my time as a medical student in Oxford - one of only 10 women in an intake of 100 students - much of my career has been spent in this inspirational city.

"It has been both a privilege and an honour to serve as a member of the Trust Board, and I want to take this opportunity to thank every member of staff for striving to achieve compassionate excellence in the care which patients receive. I will miss being part of the Trust hugely."

  • Dame Fiona has been Chairman of the Trust in its various forms since 2009:
  • Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust from 2009 to 2011
  • Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust from 2011 to 2015 after the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals joined forces
  • Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 2015 when OUH achieved Foundation Trust status

She was made DBE in 1996 for services to medicine and psychiatry, having served as the first ever female President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College in November 2018.

Dame Fiona has also been Principal of Somerville College at the University of Oxford, Chairman of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, and she continues to influence national health policy as the National Data Guardian for Health and Social Care.

Speaking when Dame Fiona announced her intention to step down in June 2018, Trust Chief Executive, Dr Bruno Holthof said: "I would like to thank Dame Fiona for her service to the NHS in Oxford over many years - for the last 10 years as our Chairman.

"We are very fortunate to have benefited from her knowledge, wisdom and sound judgement. She has brought a wealth of experience and expertise to her role as Trust Chairman.

"We wish Dame Fiona all the very best for the future."

Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery will take up his post as the new Trust Chair on Monday 1 April 2019 following his appointment by the Council of Governors - which includes elected representatives of the public and staff - in December 2018.
