The team responsible for implementing a unique model of physical and mental health care at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted for Team of the Year by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The Integrated Psychological Medicine Service team has been recognised for delivering a novel way of providing psychiatric and psychological care to people who are physically ill.

Rather than having separate medical and mental health teams - a common set-up for psychiatry teams at general hospitals - the Trust has integrated joined-up teams that include experts in mental as well as physical healthcare.

Having a joined-up team to oversee both areas of care means patients' needs can be addressed more effectively. This approach removes traditional barriers between physical and mental healthcare, and enhances the level of care the Trust provides.

The Psychological Medicine team members not only see patients, but also advise and support clinical staff.

The overall aim is to transform the range and quality of care that clinicians can provide to their patients.

Trailblazing a new approach

Professor Michael Sharpe, Trust Lead for Psychological Medicine at Oxford University Hospitals, said: "The Trust's approach has been successful and is regarded as a beacon of quality for integrated care by NHS England.

"The psychological medicine service is trailblazing a new approach to providing fully patient-centred care."

The service comprises approximately 40 clinical psychologists and 12 consultant psychiatrists, as well as nurses, occupational therapists, and clerical staff.

Prof Sharpe added: "The team's success is down to their willingness to roll up their sleeves and get involved whenever they're needed - patient care is paramount.

"The team is incredibly proud to be shortlisted by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

"We are particularly pleased because not everyone understands this new integrated way of working. They are more used to mental and physical healthcare being delivered by different organisations.

"Being shortlisted for an award is important because it shows that the integrated approach is increasingly being understood, and its value recognised. Winning would underscore that recognition."

The RCPsych Awards mark the highest level of achievement in psychiatry and has 17 categories for its 2018 edition.

Winners will be announced at the RCPsych Awards Ceremony at the College in London on Wednesday 7 November 2018.
