Building work to create a new state-of-the-art extension to the Sobell House Hospice on the Churchill Hospital site starts on Monday 21 May 2018.

The £4.3 million cost of the Sobell Clinic and Garden Annex, which is due to open to patients in May 2019, has been entirely funded by the people of Oxfordshire through donations and legacies.

The Sobell Clinic will be a modern and welcoming outpatient service for people who have a terminal illness and need access to vital specialist services so they can remain living at home for longer.

The Garden Annex will be a six-patient ward which has been designed to care safely for frailer or confused patients by using design and colour to create a calm environment and allow for easy navigation.

Dr Tim Harrison, Clinical Lead at Sobell House, says: "The nature of hospice care is changing. As medical techniques develop, people are living longer and we have seen a huge increase in patients with complex medical needs who require great skill and dedication from those who care for them.

"This pressure will only increase over the next generations and so it is vital that we create the right environment to look after them.

"Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we are now able to make the Sobell House building better suited to meet the future needs for end of life care in Oxfordshire."

Clinical staff worked with GBS Architects to develop a concept for the new building with the aim of providing specialist facilities that complement those of the existing hospice and cater for increasing numbers of patients with more complex care needs.

Dr Mary Miller, Palliative Care Consultant at Oxford University Hospitals, says:

"Patients and their families who need the services of Sobell House deserve the best care we can provide. This new purpose-built facility will improve our ability to provide exceptional care and provide a valuable space to care for those who are nearing the end of their life."
