Trust showing how to save lives this Restart a Heart Day

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be supporting 'Restart a Heart Day' on Wednesday 16 October 2019 by teaching both members of the public and staff the steps they can take to save lives.

The Trust's Resuscitation Department will be hosting a special event on the day, including CPR simulations and a 'CPR challenge' competition.

Behind the event lies a serious message - across the UK, there are over 30,000 cardiac arrests outside of hospital ever year, and the survival rate is less than one in 10.

Emma Spencer, Resuscitation Practitioner at the John Radcliffe Hospital, said: "We are really pleased to be supporting this year's 'Restart a Heart' day. We know that if life-saving measures are carried out as soon as possible after an individual suffers a cardiac arrest, their chance of survival is greatly improved. By showing patients and visitors to our hospital how to carry out these life-saving actions, we can hopefully help them feel more confident should they be with someone who suffers cardiac arrest."

The team will also be joined by South Central Ambulance Service and the Injury Minimization Programme for Schools (I.M.P.S.), who teach life-saving skills to year six pupils and recently celebrated teaching 100,000 children.

The Trust's Resuscitation Department covers all Trust sites and provides clinical, operational, and educational support to all staff, helping to deal with life-threatening medical emergencies such as cardiac arrest.

In the same week, the Trust will also be celebrating the 10th birthday of its Heart Centre with a special event on Thursday 17 October 2019. Keep an eye out on social media for our #OxHeartCentre10 posts.
