Team inspired by talk on leadership

Leadership is a precious commodity in today's NHS, and John Drew, Director of Improvement and Culture at OUH, has launched a series of talks on leadership for all OUH staff, delivered by a range of internal and external speakers.
On Wednesday 31 July 2019, the Trust's Neurosciences team (part of our Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Trauma, Specialist Surgery, Children's and Neonates (NOTSSCaN) Division), were inspired by a lecture by Prof Michael West, delivered at Oxford Brookes University, on Leadership and Culture in the NHS, focusing on compassionate leadership.
Professor West is a Senior Fellow at the King's Fund and Professor of Organisational Psychology at Lancaster University Management School. The focus of his research over 30 years has been culture and leadership in organisations, team and organisational innovation and effectiveness, particularly in relation to the organisation of health services.
The 'take-home' messages for our Neurosciences team were 'listening with fascination', sharing an understanding of what staff are facing, empathising with them and then taking action to help.
The team (supported by the NOTSSCaN Division) is working to develop a vision and strategy, building meaningful shared team objectives and understanding how they work both as individuals and together. Part of this is recognising the importance of their own wellbeing, looking after each other, and understanding how this can help them to care for patients.
More talks on leadership are scheduled for our staff in the remainder of 2019.
