Horton General Hospital acquires second CT scanner

03/05/2023

The Horton General Hospital, is part of Oxford University Hospitals, and has acquired a new Siemens GoTop CT scanner.

The Horton hospital was the only acute hospital site within the Berkshire, Oxfordshire, and Buckinghamshire Integrated Care System (BOB ICS) that did not have two CT scanners. This meant that both emergency department patients and inpatients needing scans during any planned or unplanned downtime had to travel to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford to get them done.

The new CT scanner will help to reduce waiting lists as it is planned to do approximately 1,000 outpatient scans monthly with each scan taking around 15 minutes. In addition, biopsy capacity will increase which will save patients time and money going to Oxford to complete scans, further improving patient care in Banbury.

Having two CT scanners operational at the Horton General Hospital means one scanner can focus on more interventional scans (biopsies, cardiac, CT Colonography as well as other outpatient type scans) and the other scanner can scan both outpatients, emergency ED patients and other inpatients more efficiently, providing a better patient experience and expediting the patient's pathway.

Six members of staff will be running both scanners. Applications training has been completed and a team of core trainers are now implementing cascade training for the CT Team.

Sara Randall, Chief Operating Officer, Oxford University Hospitals said: "I would really like to thank everyone who has worked so hard in the procurement and installation of the new CT scanner. This is a great investment in improving patient care for the people of Banbury and its surrounding area, and is part of our programme of investment in the Horton General Hospital."

Toni Mackay, Operational Service Manager Diagnostics, Oxford University Hospitals said: "This is a great investment in equipment and staffing at the Horton, providing resilience supporting both emergency and elective patients.  The staff have been amazing managing the service both with a mobile scanner and during the installation works."

Tracy Condon, Radiology Site Lead, Horton General Hospital, CT Modality Lead, Oxford University Hospitals said: “This is an exciting time for the Radiology Team at the Horton General Hospital who have worked through the challenges of installing the new scanner and are embracing developing new skills and the ability to maintain a continuous excellent CT service to all inpatients and outpatients of Banbury and the surrounding areas.”
