Immunology Laboratory
The Immunology Laboratory is an integral part of the Oxford University Hospitals. We serve a broad client base both nationally and internationally and provide a wide and diverse repertoire of tests.
The department comprises diagnostic services and the Oxford NHS Immunology Translational Laboratory.
We are members of the National Pathology Exchange (NPEx) scheme. Please contact us to set up NPEx requesting.
The Immunology Laboratory is a UKAS accredited medical laboratory, number 8782. All accredited and non-accredited tests are quality assured.
Diagnostic tests
All test requests must fulfil our acceptance criteria.
Sample acceptance criteria
Taken from CHI-SOP-S1 Specimen Reception
To ensure adequate identification of samples processed by Clinical Immunology, each sample and request card must have a minimum of two matched identifiers.
These identifiers must include a minimum of one from each of the following lists (one from A and one from B):
List A
- Full name = surname name and first name (e.g. SMITH and JOHN)
- Special clinic number e.g. M69457
- Medical trial unique identifier
List B
- NHS number
- Local hospital number
- Date of birth
- Referral laboratory number
If the sample match is less than the minimum above the sample will not be tested. Please discuss any questions regarding this with the laboratory.
Samples that are grossly lipaemic, icteric or haemolysed may adversely affect the validity of results and may be rejected for analysis.
Also, plasma samples are unacceptable for electrophoresis.
Any specific interferences for particular tests are noted in test information by exception and the Measurement of Uncertainty for a specific test is available upon request.
