Horton Day Case Unit

In this page

The Day Case Unit at the Horton General Hospital is a small friendly unit treating up to 30 patients each day. Most of our patients go home on the same day, providing it is safe for them to do so.

The types of surgery we undertake include:

  • general surgery
  • vascular surgery
  • urology
  • plastic surgery
  • minor trauma
  • orthopaedics
  • radiology
  • cataract surgery.

Before your operation

Patients are usually admitted to the unit at either 8.00am or 12.00 noon. Operations take place 9.00am - 5.00pm.

Your admission letter will tell you when you need to arrive: the unit does not open until 7.50am so it is best not to arrive too early.

Please follow the instructions in your letter. Instructions for patients before surgery can also be found here:

Please, do not bring any valuables into hospital with you; Oxford University Hospitals is not responsible for any items lost or stolen.

Please be aware that your operation time may change. A surgeon and an anesthetist will see you before the day's schedule of operations begins: please ask any questions you like.

After your operation

When you come back to the ward after surgery you will be left to sleep for a while. You may have a drink of water unless the surgical team ask you not to. If you have had a general anaesthetic you may feel slightly nauseous. When you are a little more awake we will offer you a hot drink and a sandwich.

There is a restaurant for visitors and vending machines in the hospital corridors.

Going home

When you are ready you will be transferred to a chair. The nurse looking after you will give you written discharge information and talk you through it.

After a general anaesthetic you must be accompanied for 24 hours. Your operation may not go ahead if you do not have someone to look after you once discharged.

You will only be allowed to go home if you have somebody at home to look after you, and you must be accompanied by an adult.

The Day Case Unit at the Horton General Hospital can be reached from the Oxford Road entrance.

If you arrive by car, you will have to pay to park your car. There is disabled parking in the main car parks. Disabled drivers should park in allocated disabled spaces and, if possible, walk to the unit, or use a wheelchair (found in the main corridor just by the X-ray department).

The hospital is all on one level, apart from the medical block.
