Public involvement

The Trust must listen to feedback from patients, carers and the public, and take their views into account when planning services. The involvement of the public in the NHS helps us to innovate and improve what we do.

NHS organisations are required to involve patients and the public in:

  • planning of the provision of services
  • the development and consideration of proposals for changes in the way those services are provided
  • decisions affecting operation of services.

Have your say on local health issues

Your feedback can help shape the healthcare services that NHS Oxfordshire provides across the county.

The Patient and Public Panel

There are now 35 members who are gradually becoming more closely involved with Trust activities.

Examples of successful involvement include:

  • links with private finance initiatives (new building work)
  • participation in patient environment inspections
  • links with discussions on patient privacy and dignity
  • participation in a working group developing guidelines on patient restraint.

In order to embrace a broad perspective we would like to hear from people from all parts of the community, from a range of different ethnic groups, different genders and people with disabilities.

We would also like to give people the opportunity to learn more about the hospitals and how services are provided.

If you visit a department regularly and would like to comment on services, you could ask if there is a suggestion box.

LINks - Local Involvement Networks

Have you ever wanted to speak up about a health or social care service in your area but not known how? It might have been to offer an opinion on how things could be improved, or talk about an experience - good or bad.

Oxfordshire Local Involvement Network (LINk) can give you that opportunity.

Oxfordshire LINk has been set up to give communities a stronger voice in how their health and social care services are delivered. The goal of Oxfordshire LINk is to be Your Voice on Social Care and Health, which includes finding out what you like and don't like about the services you use and what new services you need.

All views matter - we want to hear from you!

Visit our website to find out more and give us your feedback on the services you are using.

Head and Neck Consultation

From 23 January 2012 until 24 February 2012 there was a period of consultation in relation to the options appraisal for Head and Neck Cancer Services at the Oxford University Hospitals.

Following the conclusion of the review of options for the future location of the services, the Trust Board approved a relocation of these services to the Churchill Hospital.

The timing of the transfer of the service to the Churchill Hospital will be confirmed in July 2012, as further work is required to finalise proposals to create additional operating theatre critical care capacity on the Churchill hospital site.

Working with the voluntary sector

Many hospital departments have links with voluntary organisations. Involvement varies; for some it is an exchange of information, and for others it is being far more involved in service developments.

The following organisations provide important support for the Trust and its patients and staff.

Healthtalkonline / Youthhealthtalk

DIPEx has created two websites healthtalkonline.org and youthhealthtalk.org of people's experiences of nearly 60 different illnesses and health conditions. The websites are aimed at patients, their carers, family and friends, doctors, nurses and other health professionals, and are based on in-depth qualitative research carried out by the Health Experiences Research Group at the University of Oxford.
