Ten years ago the doors opened to a hospital that now holds a special place in the hearts of thousands of families across Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties.

Designed with the needs of children and their families in mind, Oxford Children's Hospital is bright and spacious, built with indoor and outdoor play areas and its own school.

The hospital was made possible thanks to a huge campaign that raised around £15 million to fund half the costs of this wonderful local facility.

To mark this anniversary we have launched a £2 million fundraising appeal - to make the hospital and children's services across our NHS trust even better for our young patients and their families.

We have also launched a new website dedicated to this appeal:

We hope you will help us!

Oxford Children's Hospital Charity celebrates raising £1 million

We know that one of the most important things we can offer children in hospital is the chance for their parents to be close by - day or night.

Many of our patients travel a long way to get to our hospital, and the current accommodation we have for parents to stay overnight simply isn't big enough for all of them. Some parents, including those of newborn babies in intensive care and others with children having major surgery, are unable to stay overnight. We want to do better than this.

Working with the Ronald McDonald House Charity, planning has now been agreed to build a new 60 bedroom accommodation at the John Radcliffe Hospital for parents to stay near their children as they go through treatment.

Our new fundraising campaign will help make this happen.

We also plan to make improvements to outside play areas, and we want to keep up with the latest medical advances by providing more state-of-the-art medical equipment and utilising the latest developments in biomedical science.

All the funds raised will benefit children's care across Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including the Horton General Hospital in Banbury and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.

Laura's story

Laura's story

Laura tells us why fundraising makes a difference

14 year old Laura Thompson has already had 10 operations since her birth at the Oxford Children's Hospital and has spent around 15 percent of her life in hospital.

She says:

"At the Oxford Children's Hospital I'm as happy as any unwell child can be. And my dad says happy kids get better more quickly.

"The staff are so lovely and of course want to use the very latest and best technology available: vital tools for getting us kids fixed, back to school and home to our families.

"However, all that amazing medical equipment is expensive, and much of it is paid for through the charity.

"So I want to thank all those already supporting the Children's Hospital. It has made a massive difference to me and thousands of other children."

Katie's story

Katie Ledger and her son Max

Katie Ledger, pictured with her son Max, explains why she donates regularly to the Oxford Children's Hospital.

"Max is seven years old and has leukaemia. He was diagnosed two and a half years ago and we are now regular users of the Oxford Children's Hospital. I see everything from a completely different perspective as a result of what happened to Max, and I defy anyone to spend a week in Kamran's Ward - the children's cancer unit - and not come out feeling different. I give £20 a month to the Children's Hospital, because I can see first-hand how the fundraising helps."
