Cardiovascular Medicine

The diagnosis, management and treatment of patients with heart disease is a very important area of medical practice, in which medical and surgical teams work closely together.

The Oxford University Hospitals maintains one of only three heart valve banks in the UK, which supplies homograft services to the John Radcliffe Hospital and other hospitals throughout the country.

The services for inpatients, day cases and outpatients are provided at the John Radcliffe Hospital.

The University of Oxford Department of Cardiovascular Medicine works closely with the NHS teams.

Cardiac research interests include:

  • the genetic basis of risk factors for coronary heart disease
  • the development of devices to support heart failure
  • the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
  • the links between kidney and heart diseases.
