Value Based Interviewing (VBI)

Background

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) started to use Value Based Interviewing in 2013 following a successful partnership with the Health Foundation and The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC). The programme of work sought to ensure that the OUH organisational values were reflected in the day-to-day care it provides, through designing and delivering value based interviewing as part of its recruitment process.

The OUH core values were drawn up from the following themes identified by staff:

The OUH recognises that the values and attitudes of our staff can have the greatest negative impact on the quality of patient care and patient experiences.

VBI has been used and established in a number of organisations, including the NSPCC. It has been shown to effectively identify candidates who are a 'better fit' for the organisation, and therefore the right people to deliver the best service to patients or service users, and it has also been demonstrated that VBI helps to ensure that those recruited are more likely to be happy and engaged in their roles because of their fit with the organisation's culture.

VBI is underpinned by robust research, and it has been proven that this interviewing method facilitates the recruitment of people more aligned with organisational values and behaviours, and helps recruit high performing and effective staff. In March 2015, the OUH published its own evaluation on the effectiveness of VBI within an NHS setting - use link below to view:
